Essex County Executive DiVincenzo Invites Children and Families
to Expand their Understanding and Appreciation of the Environment

Essex County, NJ – A variety of programs are being offered at the Essex County Environmental Center during the month of October that will teach children and adults about nature and help them gain a greater appreciation and understanding of our environment. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites children and adults to visit the Environmental Center where they can enjoy an enriching recreational experience through nature and conservation activities.

“Our Environmental Center has become the premiere location for environmental education and nature appreciation. With the help of our partner groups, our dynamic schedule of events and activities will captivate all ages,” DiVincenzo said. “Walk in our woods, discover habitats, get pointers on gardening, learn about nature photography and much more. It’s all about nature and it’s all at our Environmental Center,” he added.

Events scheduled for October are as follows:

“Chair Yoga Thursdays” is for adults. Whether you are new to yoga, are an older adult or know and love yoga but no longer get up and down from the floor easily, chair yoga may be for you! All poses are done seated or standing next to a chair. Participants will use breath to guide them through class and end with a relaxing meditation. All levels and ages welcome. Dress comfortably. Cost is $36 for the series or $28 for those 65 and older. Advance registration and monthly payment are required. For information, call 973-228-8776. Chair Yoga Thursdays will be held as follows:

“Thursday Evening Yoga” is geared for adults. This all-levels yoga series will focus on alignment, flow and warmth followed by a restorative pose to unwind the body and mind for bed. “Friday Morning Yoga” is geared for adults. This class will explore the many joys of yoga. Breathing synchronized with movement will warm the body and relax the mind. All levels are welcome. “Health and Wellness Workshop” is for adults and children ages 13 and older. Ever wonder if items from the drug store — cough syrup, decongestants and antiseptics — might be doing more harm than good? In this workshop, participants will search out natural and effective alternatives for treating family health issues and injuries using 100 percent plant-based essential oils. This introductory class will start a path of discovery to regain control of your own family's wellness for the upcoming cold and flu season. Cost is $9 person. Advance registration is required. “Tuesday Afternoon Yoga with Meditation” is for adults. The focus of this class is on the many benefits of long-held, seated poses. Participants will lengthen tissues that connect, wrap and interweave muscles, helping to increase their range of motion and free up areas of limitation. They will cultivate a meditative state in each pose, as well as sit for a meditation at the end of class. All levels are welcome. Cost is $10 per class. Advance registration is required. “4-H Young Gardeners Club” is for children in grades 1 through 9. Ever wonder how vegetables and flowers grow? Where spaghetti sauce comes from? How to find a rainbow in a garden? “Soil Science: The Good Guys … We Can't See” is for adults. Marleny Franco from Grace Landscaping will talk about how to garden chemical-free by using microbes to restore soil. With the addition of microbes, soil will be able to provide all the necessary macro and micronutrients, the plants that sprout and grow will be filled with minerals and vitality, the food harvested will be healthier, tastier and more diversified, and intestinal microbes will wildly applaud a new, healthier diet. “Frog Pond Science Club” is for children ages 5 through 9. Uncover and discover ecosystem interactions at the frog pond. “Movie Night: Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?” is for adults. Taking viewers on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world, including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. Together, they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature. A Q&A session with a local beekeeper and Rutgers Cooperative Extension agent will follow. “Little Explorers Fall Nature Program” is for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers. This class uses stories, walks and crafts to develop an awareness and appreciation for science and nature for the child as well as the caregiver. Each week, a different nature or science topic is covered. In-person registration will take place on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Center on Tuesday, September 2nd at 9 a.m. Cost is $7 per child/session (additional material fees may apply). “Birding Hike in Troy Meadows” is presented by New Jersey Audubon. Troy Meadows in East Hanover is an excellent place to encounter ducks, herons and marsh birds, plus migrating passerines. Participants will meet at the Essex County Environmental Center and carpool to the trail head. Cost is $6 for NJA members and $8 for non-members. “10th Annual Octoberfest Fall Family Celebration” is family-oriented event that is open to the public. There will be fun-filled activities for the entire family to enjoy, including hands-on nature games and crafts, farmer’s market featuring a variety of NJ Fresh seasonal produce, canoeing, Native American life, pumpkin patch, petting zoo, food, and more. “Frog Pond Fun Holiday Camp” is for students in grades 1, 2 and 3. Explore the depths of our pond and wander into our wooded wetland to discover what’s there beyond first glance. Through outdoor and indoor activities, campers will uncover the adaptations that allow frogs and other wetland organisms to survive and thrive while learning how we can become stewards for these fascinating species. “Professional Development: Project Learning Tree” is for adults. These two curriculum guides, Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood and Growing Up WILD, and music CD, engage children ages 3 to 7 in outdoor exploration and play. The many nature-themed lessons use hands-on activities to integrate the outdoors with art, literature, math, music, and movement. Cost is $25. “Backyard Composting Made Easy” is for all ages. Learn everything you need to know to successfully compost organic waste in your backyard. “The Basics of Teaching Outdoors” is for adults. Using New Jersey Audubon’s Bridges to the Natural World, participants will explore ways in which the outdoors can be used to enhance teaching. Hear about the benefits of place-based learning, outdoor classroom management and general safety guidelines along with curriculum ideas that support STEM education and the arts. This workshop is great for home-school parents, after-school providers, scout leaders or anyone who loves the outdoors! The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 22 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, Treetop Adventure Course, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, two miniature golf courses, three off-leash dog facilities, a castle and the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.
